Lack of European football could be a blessing

Manchester United’s poor form this term means that for the first time in 20 years they will go into a season without the chance of winning a European trophy.

The first year after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to be a tough one but nobody could have predicted just how much the team would struggle and once it was confirmed that a top four finish was off the agenda, it seemed inevitable that David Moyes would lose his job.

Despite a late season flourish under interim boss Ryan Giggs, the players couldn’t manage to break into the Europa League places and had to settle for the club’s worst final league position in the Premier League era. Continue reading “Lack of European football could be a blessing”

MOYES LEAVES UNITED IN LURCH

David Moyes and his future as the head coach of Manchester United has been in risk since the midterm session of the season when the results and performances of the squad were completely different from the previous season when they managed on winning the Premier League.

Manchester United is well out of reach of securing the league title and instead they are just trying on landing a Europa League spot but even that seems to be out a bit far-fetched.

UNITED STILL IN IT

Manchester United manager David Moyes breathed a sigh of relief after his team came out of the Champions League quarter-final match against Bayern Munich with a credible 1-1 draw. This leaves the club with a fighting chance in the second leg against one of the top teams in the world. Bayern Munich have widely been regarded as the best team for the last couple of years. They have been taken to another level by former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who came to the club in the summer.

However, a goal from Nemanja Vidic from a corner in the second half helped put United ahead in the tie for the first time, although they had several opportunities to take the lead through the likes of Danny Welbeck. It was a disappointing performance from Bayern, who did not create much opportunities. On the other hand, United defended with numbers on the back which made it hard for the German outfit to break through. Bastian Schweinsteiger, though, got the vital away goal that will become crucial in the second leg, but it at least leaves United with a fighting chance at a time when they were expected to get thrashed.

Moyes said after the encounter that the club are going to the second leg with belief that they can progress to the semifinals.

“We know we’ve got to score a goal. At the moment if the score stays the same, Bayern are through. We’ve got to do something about it. I think tonight we said that we wanted to go into the next leg with a real chance – a fighting chance – I think we’ve done that. We’ve given ourselves a great opportunity to try to go to Munich and get a victory,” said Moyes, whose team have an away trip against Newcastle United in between the two legs of the Champions League.

United Need to Capitalise on CL Success

In hindsight, it could appear that Manchester United’s bitter defeat 3-0 to Liverpool at the weekend was exactly what David Moyes’ men needed to turn their season around; last night’s rousing victory over Greek outfit, Olympiakos, at Old Trafford was certainly no fluke.

However, with only nine games remaining of the 2013/14 season, a run that includes nightmare fixtures with Manchester City and Everton, the Reds still have a hill to climb if they hope to claim a spot in Europe, and salvage what has been a frustrating season for the 2012/13 champions.
