Manchester United secured only their fourth win of 2014 after a 3-0 win over West Brom during the weekend. This win helped lift a huge amount of pressure off David Moyes, as United have been struggling in front of goal throughout this campaign. This has pushed them outside the top six in recent weeks, but this win will give them a lot of confidence going into a crucial run of matches. United take on archrivals Liverpool at Old Trafford next weekend, which will be followed by matches against Olympiakos and Manchester City.

Moyes sent an emotional letter to United’s fans ahead of this match claiming that they have shown their support for most of the season, but they should continue with it in order to help United claim results. United have been especially poor at Old Trafford where they have suffered numerous defeats in the league. West Brom were looking to achieve a famous double over United, as they had already beaten them in the reverse fixture, but a convincing performance from the champions put them on course to a comfortable win.

Wayne Rooney was on the scoresheet along with Phil Jones and Danny Welbeck. Moyes also praised the performances of van Persie and Rooney after the match.

“I thought Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney were excellent. Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj too, but we also needed a good defensive performance as well so, all round, I’m pleased. The pitch was very lively, it was drying out a little bit and it wasn’t that easy to pass the ball, but we looked much more potent going forward and looked more likely to score than we have in other games. I made the point about us trying to attack more and have better play going forward and I think we did that,” said Moyes.

Man United’s most important game of the season by a long chalk is coming up. In many ways, the whole of United’s season now boils down to the home return leg against Greek Champions Olympiakos.

The Champions League is now the only possibility of salvaging some shred of credibility from what we can only politely describe as a “transitional” season. There are other words – but we want to be polite here. After the weekend’s 2-2 draw with Fulham, Manchester United were not in a position to drop any more points in order to finish in the top four. They already trailed Liverpool by a massive nine points with 13 matches left in the campaign. The situation got worse for David Moyes after United fell 13 points behind their arch rivals following a 0-0 draw with Arsenal. Liverpool, meanwhile, managed to win their game against Fulham 3-2 with a lastgasp penalty from Steven Gerrard. As a result, there is a danger of United missing out on the Champions league football for the first time in more than two decades.

This could have serious implications of the finances of the club, but manager David Moyes is still hoping that the club finish in the top four. Despite falling 13 points behind their main rivals, he thinks that the club can claw back the deficit in the remaining 12 matches of the season. United have been poor since the start of the season, but their record in 2014 has just got worse with this draw. Moyes has recalled that United have always been great in the second half of the season, while he is now set to focus only on United’s games and not look at the opponents.

“If there is one club who have been great at winning games in the second half of the season, and putting pressure on the teams above, it is Manchester United. We will continue to do that and try to make it work. We can only do our job the best we can. We want to make it better and we can’t bother about other teams. All we can do is try to win our next game,” said Moyes, whose team has just one win in the last five matches.

NEW FACES

The Manchester United boss David Moyes has finally admitted that he needs to land new faces at Old Trafford.

United’s disastrous season continued last weekend as they got defeated by the low profile Swansea City side in the third round of the FA Cup at Old Trafford. The match was going towards a draw, but, a 90th minute strike by the Ivorian forward Bony made sure that the Red Devils would suffer yet another home defeat. Now, United has lost as many as 5 games at Old Trafford this season.

United was reduced to 10 players towards the end of the match as one of their defenders Fabio Da Silva was shown Red Card  in the 80th minute, but, they can’t use that as an excuse.

Talking to the reporters in the press conference after the game against Swansea City, Moyes said, “Yes, we need to bring in new guys, but, if the guys we want are available at this point of time or not, that’s the main thing. I don’t think they are available and that’s why I don’t want to create too much hype over the new signings.”

Moyes had decided to rest some of his regular players including Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra for Sunday’s game and that proved to be costly for the team. When asked about that decision of his, the Scot said, “The players who were out there were all quality players. It’s just that we couldn’t execute our plans well.”

Since his arrival at Old Trafford this summer, Moyes has signed just one big player i.e. Marouane Fellaini and he too is not playing at the moment as he is suffering from wrist injury. He has recently undergone surgery and he is not supposed to come back very soon.
