ROONEY DEMANDS MORE

The Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has urged his teammates to perform well in defence if they are to win the title this season. It has been a strange season for Manchester United, who are normally extremely solid at the back. This season, they have been shipping a lot of goals in the matches. Even more worrying for Wayne Rooney is the fact that they concede a lot of goals first match whereas previously they used to score the first goal. Even though the famous Manchester United comeback ability has come to the rescue on numerous occasions this season, it has not been the story against the likes of Galatasaray and Norwich recently.

Manchester United lost both matches after conceding the first goal. It could have been a repeat of the same once again last weekend, as United conceded against QPR. The struggling Premier league team were coming to Old Trafford without a manager, but they had a short spell immediately after the second half in which they scored through Jamie Mackie. However, goals from the likes of Darren Fletcher helped United win the match 3-1 in the end. This also lifted them to the top of the Premier league table once again.

“I don’t know why [we concede the first goal] it is but it’s happening too many times. We need to just go out now and try to get the early goal. As soon as we get a goal, the team settles down and the game settles. We tend to take control of the game. But more often than not we’ve conceded first and made it hard for ourselves to try to get back in the game then go on and win it,” said Rooney. Rooney has not been firing on all cylinders for Manchester United this season.

UNITED SMASH NEWCASTLE

Manchester United has defeated Newcastle United in a Premier League match played at St. James Park on Sunday. Manchester United won the match by a profound margin of 3-0. It was a dominant performance by the Red Devils.

It was the fifth victory for United in the ongoing Premier League. Manchester United is currently at no.  2 in the Premier League points table with 15 points in seven matches.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s team had not played that well in its previous Premier League match against the Spurs on 29th of September. But, in this match, the Red Devils looked determined right from the very beginning.

Manchester United earned a corner kick in the 8th minute of the match. Robin Van Persie took the corner kick and played a lofted shot. His shot was wonderfully placed and just needed a deflection which was provided by Jonny Evans. The Newcastle goalkeeper Steve Harper tried his best to stop the ball, but, he didn’t succeed in doing so. The ball touched his finger tips and went into the goal post.

Just after 7 minutes, the lead of Manchester United was doubled when Patrice Evra found the back of the net with a fantastic header. That was the last goal to be scored in the first half.

In the earlier part of the second half, the Newcastle players looked slightly better, but, their game gradually deteriorated after the initial 15-20 minutes of the second half.

The Newcastle team got trailed by 0-3 in the 71st minute. Tom Cleverley was the one who scored the third goal for Manchester United. Wayne Rooney set up the goal and Cleverley blasted the ball into the top corner of the net with a powerful shot. Harper didn’t have any chance whatsoever.

It was a tall order for the Newcastle team to score three goals in the remaining 19 minutes and level the scores. They failed in doing so and ended up on the losing side.

Manchester United will take on Stoke City in its next match on 20th of October at Old Trafford.

UNITED WILL REGAIN TITLE

The Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has said that the added competition within the Manchester United squad will help them win the Premier league title this season. Unlike in the previous seasons, the Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made numerous signings that are capable of playing in the first team from the start. This is expected to provide a serious competition to the established players at the club. The arrival of Robin van Persie from Arsenal is expected to provide serious competition upfront, while the presence of Kagawa is expected to provide competition in the midfield.

The added competition within the squad is only going to help them according to the veteran midfielder Paul Scholes. Despite being one of the oldest members of the squad, Paul Scholes continues to be a great influence on the Manchester United play. The veteran is expected to retire at the end of the season, although there is a chance that he will be persuaded into extending his contract just like last season. Speaking after the first three rounds of the new Premier league season, Scholes has hailed the competition within the squad. Manchester United are looking to win the 20th Premier league title.

“You always like to see new players come in even if they’re in your position because it’s healthy for the team and exciting to play with the new players. We’ve got strength everywhere in the squad. We’ve struggled with injuries to defenders, but when we have everyone fit I think there are two teams that the manager has available to him and that could compete in the Premier League and cup competitions,” said Paul Scholes in a recent interview given to the official website of the club. Manchester United currently trial the leaders Chelsea by three points.

Liverpool v Manchester United preview

England’s two most successful clubs lock horns this weekend and despite the sides no longer battling for the same goals their rivalry seems to be fiercer than ever. Manchester United and Liverpool funnily enough enjoyed their own spells of dominance throughout the years. United enjoyed success in the 50s and 60s, then Liverpool in the 70s and 80s and United again in the 90s and 00s.

Liverpool came close to winning the league recently in the 2008-2009 season but fell at the final hurdle and finished second – to none other than Manchester United. Not only did they pip Liverpool to the title they also equalled their rival’s record of 18 Premier League titles which was a prestigious and precious claim unique to them. Manchester United have now surpassed that number whilst Liverpool have had some troublesome years both on and off the pitch. Continue reading “Liverpool v Manchester United preview”
